We call dating the activities people engage in when they want to get to know each other better with an eye toward a potential relationship. Dating can entail many different activities and involve two or even more people (double dating, group dating, etc).

Still, the objective of dating remains the same. People date to try to figure out whether they are compatible enough to commit to a longer, more reliable romantic bond called a "relationship". Relationships, in turn, will generally become a new trial period in which these two persons will try to figure out whether they are compatible enough to commit to a permanent bond, usually known as marriage.

Some people find dating easy and some do not. It depends on each person's background and social abilities. Some people find dating confusing too, as it implies exposing one's thoughts, feelings and sometimes even safety in order to try to get to know another person in ways they cannot control easily.

This lastly has given rise to professional dating services, from dating coaches, to counsellors and even websites.
